This force sensor can objectively and independently measure the handle force on a rowing machine of any type. Therefore, it could be used for comparison and evaluation of various rowing machines.
The most commonly, the sensor is used with BioRowTech system to measure the handle force in addition to the velocities of the three main body segments. This allows to add many important rowing variables: average and maximal handle forces, work per stroke, rowing power and derived boat speed (“split”), which can be seen on-screen in a real time. Usually, the “split” from the sensor is 2-3s faster than provided by and an erg monitor, because the sensor measures the total handle force including the tension of retracting cord, which is not taken into account by an erg electronics.
The sensor is attached directly between the handle and chain of rowing machine. The mounting dimensions are designed to fit the standard Concept2 handle (32mm distance between mounting bolts), so it is recommended to use this handle on other types of rowing machines. Being only 2cm wide, the sensor goes into the chain hole of the machine, so it doesn’t limit the stroke length at catch.
The sensor can be connected to any BioRow electronics: the Data Collector (part of BioRowTech system), Master or Slave unit. The power supplied from electronics, so the sensor doesn’t need battery charging. The connecting cable 3.5m long, can be quickly replaced if broken and replacement cable is quite inexpensive.
