BioRow 2D Instrumented gate has the same external dimensions as 1D gate, but in addition to the normal gate force it also measures axial force applied along the oar shaft (see “Dynamic analysis in transverse (horizontal) plane” in RBN 2012/08). It was found that the axial handle force does not contribute to the propulsion of the rower-boat system, but works like a heavier gearing. A rower should maximise the normal handle force applying minimal axial force to keep the oar in the gate, therefore measurements of the axial force may help to improve effectiveness of rower’s force application.
When using with BioRow Glance system, the amount of axial force and vector of the total force could be displayed on a tablet PC in a real time, so a rower can use this immediate feedback to improve rowing technique.
