Performance analysis of Worlds-2022

This Newsletter presents scientific analysis of race results from the recent World Rowing Championships in Račice, Czech Republic. It discloses essential information on the current trends in modern elite rowing, and comprehensively covers in a very concise format the following topics:

  1. Trends of rowing speed at World regattas over the 1993-2022 period: general trends over the years and in decades, as well as trends in each boat class, which can be used for performance evaluation and crew selection.
  2. A high correlation was found between yearly trends and % of the winners-2022 times to Worlds Best Times WBT.
  3. Racing stroke rate was analysed in the 14 Olympic boat types for all finalists, as well as its trends since 2000. Interestingly, this year the average stroke rate in sculling boats is higher than in sweep boats, which was never seen before
  4. The average racing strategy by 500m sections returned to normal this year after the generally uncharacteristic strategies used in Tokyo-2020. Winners and silver medallists had the most even speed distribution in finals A.
  5. For the first time, rowing speed, stroke rate and Effective Work per Stroke were analysed by 250m sections. An average distribution of efforts throughout the race was presented, and the Appendix gives detailed data for each finalist in the Olympic boat classes.

This Newsletter provides an important insight on how races were won or lost in Račice-2022, which would be of interest to elite rowers and coaches.
